Amazing Love

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭NIV‬

This phenomenal picture makes me want to cry!  It’s a snapshot that a Baltimore Police Officer took of a teen boy praying for a homeless man.  The police officer was standing near a bus stop when he noticed the young boy walk over to the homeless man.  He might have initially thought that the teenager was going to harass the man.  This often happens to the homeless on the street.  But to his shock and awe, the boy leaned down, touched the mans foot, and began to pray for him.  A couple minutes later, the boy got up, returned to his group of friends who were holding the bus for him, and rode away.

The power of this picture speaks volumes!  It both amazes and humbles me.  Every day the news is littered with stories of our youth “going off the rails.”  It seems that immorality, callousness, lack of discipline, and self entitlement run rampant.  But this is a kid who’s got it right!  He is a great example of  “being about the Father’s business” (Luke 2:49).  He took the time to listen and heed the voice of the Holy Spirit to pray for someone in need.

I hope this is as much an inspiration to you as it is for me.  Let’s Move when the Spirit says MOVE!  There are people who desperately need our intervention in their lives!  You are a gift from God.  Make yourself a “present” to others today!!

I call it Image-of-God Theology. Think about it. Jesus goes to the place of shame, pain, and despair in his community (Golgotha) and bears the image of God there (Mark 15:39). Wanna see God and live??? You and I can. It is our human vocation (Gen. 1:26) to bear the image of God, and in a fallen world, that image is needed in the hurting places to bring about restoration and healing. See what Isaiah says??? The Mountains bow down, the valleys stand up at attention, the crooked places straighten out at the sight of our God (Isa. 40:3-5) and the Gospels quote this passage just as they introduce Jesus beginning his ministry in Galilee! The creation itself groans as it waits for the revelation of the sons of God (Rom. 8:19).

This is just a thumbnail sketch – just a few proof-texts… I encourage you to look them up. Then find your vocation in them. It is the vocation you are pointing out in the picture you have posted here. It is exciting; it is healing; it is imagination expanding! And you need a really BIG imagination if you expect THIS GOD to live in it. And you need to dream big to imagine yourself bearing his image in the world he made, being part of the solution to it’s problems rather than a strange appendix merely professing Jesus without showing him to others!

Great picture! Thanx for sharing it!!!
